The present invention relates to rubber compositions containing an elastomer having olefinic unsaturation and a carboxymaleimidophenyl ester of the formula Image wherein R1 is selected from the group alkyls having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms and aryls having from 6 to 10 carbon atoms; and R2 and R3 may be the same or different and are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen and alkyls having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms.
