ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION A rubber-reinforced polymer of a monovinylidene aromatic compound, e.g., styrene, having rubber of two different particle sizes distributed through the polymer matrix and exhibiting a desirable balance of gloss and toughness properties is continuously prepared using mass polymerization techniques. Specifically, the rubber-reinforced polymer is prepared by polymerizing a solution of the rubber and monovinylidene aromatic compound in the presence of a graft promoting initiator, e.g., dibenzoyl peroxide, and at conditions sufficient to form a dispersion comprising a continuous phase of polymer having discrete, rubber particles of a particle size from 0.5 to 1.5 micron dispersed therethrough. Subsequently, additional amounts of rubber are added to the polymerization mixture and polymerization continued at conditions such that the newly added rubber is dispersed throughout the continuous polymer phase as discrete particles having a particle size from 4 to 10 microns. The polymerization is completed and the rubber subsequently crosslinked.
