A housing for a rugged handheld device is described herein. The rugged handheld device housing provides for individually replaceable components which provides greater lifespan for the handheld device since if a component breaks it can easily be replaced. Further more, the replacement of the individual components can be easily accomplished in the field while maintaining the ruggedness of the handheld device. An battery compartment with a backup battery space is alos disclosed. The battery compartment may include a ruggedized switch for signalling if the battery cover is off.
