A running board (52) for a vehicle such as a truck is mounted to the vehicle body (86) using a C-shaped mounting bracket (20). The bracket has an open clearance area (40) to accommodate air conditioning conduits (90) or other similar structure adjacent the vehicle body. The running board may include pivotable end caps (56, 58) which may be pivoted to lie parallel with the support surface (100) of the running board (52) and overlying front or rear vehicle fenders (82, 84). Mounting bolts (112, 140, 242) for the end cap (56, 58) may pass through the running board body (54) of the vehicle fender (82, 84) and the vehicle body (86).
