A motorized running board is movable between an extended position and a retracted position to provide an ample foothold for entering or exiting a vehicle, while avoiding injuring others when the running board is not in use. When a vehicle door is opened, a motor drives a spur gear, which in turn lowers the running board. When the door is closed, the motor and spur gear raise the running board so that it protrudes only slightly from the side of the vehicle. A sliding tube mechanism provides support for the running board and guides it as it moves between the extended and retracted positions to keep it substantially level.
