ABSTRACT The metal cluster cobalt carbonyl catalyst R3CCo3(CO)9, alone or promoted with Ru3(CO)12, wherein R3 is hydrogen; C1-12 alkyl, preferably C1-5 lower alkyl; C5-10 cycloalkyl or alkyl-substituted cycloalkyl; C6-12 cycloalkenyl, such as cyclohexenyl or cyclooctenyl; C1-12 alkoxy, such as methoxy or propoxy; C6-20 aryl or alkyl-, cycloalkyl-, alkoxy-, halo-, or cyano-substituted aryl; cyano; or a silyl carbyne moiety of the formula R34Si, wherein R4 is alkyl or aryl, effectively catalyzes the dealkoxyhydroxymethylation of aldehyde acetals to form glycol monoethers. Methylal, for example, may be reacted with syngas; i.e., CO and H2, in the presence of this catalyst system to form the corresponding ethylene glycol monomethyl ether. Cycloalkyl- and aryl-acetals, as well as alkyl-acetals of various aldehydes, as well as their aldehyde precursors, may likewise be reacted with syngas in the presence of these metal cluster catalysts to form the corresponding glycol monoether. The novel catalyst combination of R3CCo3(CO)9 promoted with Ru3(CO)12 is likewise claimed herein.
