A process for the preparation of rutile titanium dioxide comprises heating hydrous titanium oxide which readily converts to rutile titanium dioxide until at least 99.5 per cent by weight is in the rutile crystal form. The test for ready conversion to rutile consists of heating the hydrous titanium oxide to 950°C at a rate of 1°C per minute. Suitable material is thereby converted to at least 99.0 per cent rutile by weight. The product has a very narrow particle size and crystal size distribution and is an excellent pigment.
