Abstract of the Disclosure A new saddle clamp comprises a U-bolt and a saddle providing complementary semicircular bight portions that embrace corresponding portions of a circular cross-section cylindrical member to be clamped so that when such a member is interposed between them it is surrounded 360 degrees of its circumference. The nuts employed with the U-bolt engage downwardly-inwardly inclined nut-receiving surfaces formed around apertures in the saddle through which the U-bolt legs pass, and as the nuts are tightened they slide downwards on these inclined surfaces and the bolt legs are moved toward each other for uniform clamping sealing pressure around the cylindrical member. It is found essential that the planes in which these nuts slide-are sufficiently spaced from the common diametric plane that they do not intersect the cross- section of the cylindrical member being clamped since, if they do, a sufficiently rigid circular cross-section cylindrical member, such as a steel automobile exhaust pipe, can act as a reaction member to spread the legs apart and prevent the desired uniform sealing circumferential pressure. Prior attempts to provide such complete circumferential sealing have not been successful owing to inherent defects in the geometry of those prior proposals, which are avoided by the clamps of the invention.
