A lighting system (10) comprising a light source (12), a fibre rope (20) into which light emitted from the light source is coupled, and a control unit (26) for controlling the optical power of light emitted by the light source to maintain the fibre rope at or below a predetermined upper temperature even if the fibre is partially or fully severed.
