A safety apparatus is provided for use with a climbing harness of the kind including a waist belt (16, figure 3) having a rope (15) secured to opposite sides of the belt and passing round a pole (17) being climbed. The apparatus comprises a metal bracket (11) extending between and holding the opposite sides of the rope (15) closer together than would be the case in the absence of the bracket so as to maintain a greater length of the rope in frictional engagement with the circumference of the pole. The bracket (11) is slidable towards or away from the pole and is biassed towards the pole (17) by an elastic cord (20) passing around the pole and attached to opposite ends of the bracket.

Appareil de sécurité utilisable en association avec un harnais d'escalade du type comportant une ceinture (16, figure 3) et une corde (15) fixée à deux côtés opposés de la ceinture et passée autour du mât (17) à grimper. L'appareil comporte un élément métallique de liaison (11) s'étendant entre les deux sections opposées de la corde (15) et les reliant entre elles de sorte que leur écartement est inférieur à ce qu'il serait en l'absence de cet élément. Ainsi, la partie de la corde qui se trouve en contact de frottement avec la circonférence du poteau est plus longue. On peut faire glisser l'élément de liaison (11) afin de le rapprocher du poteau ou de l'en éloigner, et ledit élément est tiré en direction du poteau (17) par une corde élastique (20) passée autour du poteau et fixée aux extrémités opposées de l'élément de liaison.
