ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A food processor has an electric motor drive unit with a directly or indirectly driven drive shaft to which mixing and/or cutting blades are attachable. A safety device includes a brake pad of friction material which is resiliently maintained in contact with the drive shaft to brake rotation of the latter. The brake pad is in the form of a rod, one end of which is operative to contact the drive shaft periphery, and a compression coil spring urges the rod end radially with respect to the longitudinal axis of the drive shaft into contact with the drive shaft side periphery.
