Abstract of the disclosure. A buckle for a safety belt or harness for a vehicle has two parts, one part comprising a plate with an aperture and the other part comprising a casing enclosing a spring pressed unit which can be moved to operate a latch having a tooth which engages in the plate to hold the two parts of the buckle together and another spring which is compressed as the plate is inserted into the casing which spring can be used to eject the plate when the spring pressed unit is operated to remove the latch tooth from the aperture in the plate or to operate indicating or control means to indicate that the two parts of the buckle are not united or to prevent operation of the vehicle when the two parts are not united. or to perform both of these functions. The second spring is compressed during all, or almost all, of the journey of the plate within the casing to its locking position and acts to eject the plate during the whole or almost the whole of the journey of the plate from its locked position to the mouth of the casing. The plate can carry one or more projections to close any gaps between the plate and the edges of the mouth of the casing into which the end of the plate is placed, and can be cranked to close the whole of the mouth.
