ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE SAFETY BLOOD COLLECTION DEVICE A blood collection device is disclosed. The device has a sharp needle, one end of which is intended to puncture the vessel from which blood is to be drawn and the other end of which is intended to puncture the septum of a VACUTAINER brand blood collection tube. The sharp needle is enclosed within a steel cannula. The needle is biased by means of a helical spring so that in a first equilibriumposition, the tip of the needle remains within the steel cannula. The sharp needle can be urged out of the steel cannula into a second position. The vessel from which blood is to be extracted is punctured by the sharp tip of the needle when the needle is in the second position. After the needle has been introduced into the vessel, the spring returns the needle tip to the first equilibrium position so that the needle is shielded.
