A safety charging system for a battery-operated surgical hand piece (300) includes a charging base (330), a battery pack (305), and control logic (380). The charging base (330) has an RFID reader antenna (360) disposed near a top surface (375) of the charging base (330) and charge circuitry (345) for charging the battery (305). The battery pack has the battery used with the hand piece and an RFID tag antenna (320) disposed near a bottom surface of the battery pack. The control logic (380) determines if the battery should be charged based on a data point read by the RFID reader antenna.
