A climbing device for attachment to the legs of a person climbing wooden poles or trees, comprises an upright shaft having an attachment harness secured at its upper end, a stirrup formed at the lower end and extending laterally away from the shaft, and a gaff element near the lower end of the shaft at the opposite side to the stirrup. The gaff element comprises three prismatic shaped picks arranged side to side, and spaced one from the other, and the picks merge into a common base which is secured to the shaft.
