ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Safety device for machine tools such as a stamping machine or a press with a reciprocating tool carriage. The safety device includes a safety deflector surrounding the tool and having an opening at the operator's side covered by a transparent screen. When the screen is open, it actuates a limit switch attached to the safety deflector to close the limit switch and to thus deactivate the drive of a clutch or the like of the tool. A contactless switch is mounted in the deflector and in a workpiece support of the machine. The contactless switches are operable only if their distance from the respective surfaces of the workpiece is below a predetermined minimum, otherwise they maintain the clutch inoperative. Accordingly, the deflector must be close to the workpiece and the screen closed to render the tool of the machine operable.
