ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention discloses a novel safety platform for use in a vertical shaft such as a manhole. The platform comprises a pair of support beams with the ends of each support beam mounted in the wall of the shaft. At least one panel extends across the shaft and bridges the support beams with a novel moveable securing means at one end of the panel to allow the panel to be opened or secured in the closed position, and a novel pivotting means which pivotally secures the other end of the panel to the opposite support beam. The moveable securing means is a wedge clip which can be easily moved along the support beam to secure the panel or to allow the panel to move to the open position. The pivotting means comprises a novel construction which has eliminated a cumbersome and potentially dangerous J-bolt and chain combination of the prior art. This construction allows greater dimensional tolerances and requires reduced operator skill for its installation, simplifies installation, yet provides the high safety requirements for the user thereof.
