ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A surgical needle assembly is disclosed for use in the introduction of a catheter into a blood vessel. The assembly includes a safety feature which shields the needle. The assembly is made up of a cannula having a proximal end and a blunt distal end. An axial lumen extends between the two ends. A cannula hub is secured to the proximal end of the cannula. A needle is snugly located axially in the lumen of the cannula. The needle has a proximal end and a sharp distal end. A needle hub is secured to the proximal end of the needle. A spring is provided for biasing the needle relative to the cannula such that the needle is normally in a first equilibrium position in which the cannula shields the distal end of the needle. The needle can be urged against the bias of the spring into a second position in which the sharp distal end of the needle protrudes from the distal end of the cannula. In the preferred embodiment a catheter assembly is mounted axially on the cannula such that the distal end of the cannula protrudes from the catheter. Also disclosed is a method of introducing a catheter into a patient. The method has the steps of: providing a needle having a sharp tip; providing a cannula having a lumen, such that the needle fits snugly coaxially inside the lumen of the cannula; providing a catheter such that the catheter is slidably mounted axially on the cannula; providing a biasing force on the needle such that the needle is in an equilibrium position in which the needle tip is shielded by the cannula; moving the needle against the bias such that the tip of the needle protrudes from the cannula; inserting the needle into a patient; releasing the needle such that the biasing force causes the needle to revert to its equilibrium position; sliding the catheter off the cannula; removing the needle and cannula from the patient.
