,, ABSTRACT IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO TYRE AND WHEEL RIM ASSEMBLIES Improvements in a safety roller of the type described in U K Patent Specification No 1 522 028, for use within a tyre and wheel assembly to prevent disastrous loss of vehicle handling ability upon substantial tyre deflation. Improved strength, stability, and wear resistance of the safety roller support member (32) bearing surface(s) are provided in various arrangements (Figures 1, 5 and 6), generally by a relative increase in the area of lateral and skew movement-resisting bearing surfaces 30 and 34. A superior bearing material (molybdenum disulphide impregnated nylon) is proposed. New forms of circum- ferentially inextensible but laterally elastic rings (40, 42; 60;70) are proposed (Figures 1, 2 and 3) for bearing member (28) location by substantial lateral compression thereof (without possible unwanted radially outward loss of location as in the prior art). Figure 4 illustrates a possible arrangement of segmentation of the safety roller 32 and its bearing member 28 to facilitate assembly.
