A pair of safety shoes each include a sole portion and a vamp connected to the sole portion. The sole portion has an insole, a midsole connected to the underside of the insole, a welt enclosing the insole and connected to a top surface of the midsole, a steel sole plate received in the midsole and an outsole attached to the midsole. The steel sole plate is fixedly in the midsole and will not slide during walking. The welt has a flange extending radially outward therefrom and the periphery of the steel sole plate is located below the flange so that the area of the steel sole plate is larger than that of the insole.
