- I - ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A SAFETY SYSTEM FOR A CONVEYOR A method and system for detecting faulty bearings or the like on a conveyor in which an infra-red radiation sensor is used to measure the temperature of the conveyor surface and data is stored during a run of the conveyor indicative of the location of hot spots. One or more successive runs are carried out and the data stored from each run compared to distinguish the true hot spots from random hot spots. One radiation sensor is employed for comparing the surface temperature of the conveyor surface relative to the ambient temp- erature using a shutter mechanism. Two radiation sensors are employed to calculate the velocity of the conveyor. A micro-processor and associated memory is employed to store the data and carry out the comparison.
