THE ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A safety device for use in a solid fuel fired heating system with an airtight combustion chamber having a primary air feed duct with a primary air valve closeable to a minimum opening, and an exhaust duct for waste gases. The device comprises a 100% shutdown valve means through which air being fed to the combustion chamber must pass. A means is provided to hold the 100% shutdown valve means normally in open position. Also a means is provided to close completely and automatically the 100% shutdown valve means upon occurrence of a predetermined condition. Depending upon the application that means may be a fusible link, a pressure or thermostatically controlled switch, and/or a solenoid or motor means actuable upon interruption of line current, used independently or in combination with each other, to cause closing of the shutdown valve. Closing of the air flow feed completely, by closing of the shutdown valve, will put an end to all further combustion within the heating device or extinguish a flue fire. Such device meets requirements of listing agencies that prohibit the user from restricting air flow feed completely to the combustion chamber of such solid fuel fired heating devices, while at the same time permitting the safety feature of enabling complete shutdown of the unit when specific conditions arise.
