To avoid problems affecting the physicochemical stability of cosmetic products containing sal fat, the sal fat is subjected to fractional crystallization with n-hexane to obtain an olefin in the form of a clear liquid at ambient temperature. The olefin obtained is suitable for the preparation of cosmetic compositions in the form of aqueous or anhydrous emulsions which retain a smooth and lustrous appearance while showing the qualities of sal fat.
