An improved method for determining the presence of an analyte in an oral fluid sample. In the method, a reaction mixture is produced containing at least a portion of the collected sample and a chromogenic substrate effective to produce a colored product upon reaction with amylase present in the sample. After a selected reaction time, the reaction medium is inspected to determine the level of colored product produced in the medium within the selected reaction time. Production of colored product above a preselected threshold level within the selected reaction time indicates that an effective volume of undiluted saliva sample has been collected sufficient to allow detection of the analyte. The invention also includes a device for use in the method.

Procédé amélioré permettant de déterminer la présence d'un analyte dans un échantillon de liquide buccal. Selon ce procédé, on produit un mélange réactionnel contenant au moins une partie de l'échantillon recueilli ainsi qu'un substrat chromogène permettant d'obtenir un produit coloré par réaction avec l'amylase présente dans l'échantillon. Après un temps de réaction choisi, le milieu réactionnel est examiné afin de déterminer le niveau de formation du produit coloré dans le milieu, au cours de ce temps de réaction choisi. La formation de ce produit coloré à un niveau supérieur à un seuil présélectionné, dans le temps de réaction choisi, indique qu'un volume efficace d'un échantillon de salive non diluée a été recueilli et que ce volume est suffisant pour permettre la détection de l'analyte. L'invention se rapporte également à un dispositif s'utilisant selon ce procédé.
