ABSTRACT A novel series of compounds is disclosed which consists of suflonate or sulfonate-sulfinate salts of dicyclopentadiene. Methods for producing these compounds by bisulfite addition and for controlling the proportion of mono- sulfonates and disulfonates in the product are also disclosed. A preferred compound according to the invention is a compound of the formula DHx-y(SO3M)x(SO2M)y, wherein D is a tricyclic ring structure of C10H12 derived from the Diels-Alder dimer of cyclopentadiene, M is an alkali metal or ammonium cation, x is 1 or 2, and y is 0, 1 or 2, provided that y is equal to or less than x.
