A method of analysis for determining a characteristic cycle time of a sample. The method comprises exciting active elements in the sample with sufficient intensity that at least some of the active elements are re-excited to an excited state substantially immediately following relaxation to a ground state, detecting quanta emitted by the active elements in the sample to obtain a detected signal, and analysing the detected signal to derive the characteristic cycle time. The number of active elements in the sample and the intensity of the excitation are such that quanta are detected in a stream in which individual quanta are distinguishable from each other.

Procédé d'analyse servant à déterminer un temps de cycle caractéristique d'un spécimen. Ce procédé consiste à exciter des éléments actifs de ce spécimen avec une intensité suffisante pour qu'au moins quelques uns de ces éléments actifs soient de nouveau excités vers un état d'excitation pratiquement immédiatement après leur relaxation vers un état fondamental, à détecter les quanta émis par les éléments actifs du spécimen afin d'obtenir un signal détecté et à analyser ce signal détecté afin d'obtenir le temps de cycle caractéristique. Le nombre d'éléments actifs du spécimen et l'intensité de l'excitation sont de telle nature que les quanta sont détectés dans un flux dans lequel on peut distinguer les quanta individuels les uns des autres.
