A sand sleeve and method of use of the same. The sand sleeve has a tubular body with a plug seat at a second end to accommodate a removable plug and shiftable sleeve at a first end that can be shifted to an open position to permit fluid flow, while the removable plug is in place. The sand sleeve is inserted into a well with the shiftable sleeve in a closed position and the tubular body in an orientation where a first end is above a second end. The shiftable sleeve is shifted to the open position with the removable plug engaged with the plug seat. This permits entry of oil and gas into the well from a formation through the radial flow openings, while the removable plug prevents fluids from lower formations from flowing through the central flow channel and intermingling. Flow turbulence through the radial flow openings keeps sand from settling on the removable plug.
