A sandwich material comprising two metal plates affixed to and separated by a fibrous core, is characterised in that the core comprises a three--dimensional porous network comprising metal fibres, wherein substantially all of the fibres are inclined at an acute angle to the plates. The sandwich material is lightweight, thin and handles like a monolithic sheet. It displays high beam stiffness and is easy to weld. It is therefore particularly useful in the manufacture of aircraft and vehicle parts.

Matériau en sandwich constitué de deux plaques métalliques fixées à un noyau fibreux et séparées par ce noyau, qui est constitué d'un réseau tridimensionnel et poreux de fibres métalliques dans lequel toutes les fibres forment un angle aigu par rapport aux plaques. Le matériau en sandwich est léger et mince et se comporte comme une feuille monolithique. Le matériau offre une forte résistance à la flexion et est facile à souder. Il est donc particulièrement utile pour la fabrication d'aéronefs et de pièces de véhicules.
