SANDWICH POWER TAKEOFF ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A power takeoff housing is sandwiched between the engine flywheel housing and the transmission housing of a truck. A power takeoff drive shaft in the PTO housing permanently couples the engine crankshaft to the transmission. A power takeoff drive sprocket keyed to the drive shaft drives a chain or belt which transmits power to a driven sprocket which is integral with a hollow open ended power takeoff driven shaft also rotatably mounted in the power takeoff housing. A power takeoff output shaft is rotatably mounted in the PTO housing at one end thereof and in the inside of the driven shaft at the other end. A hydraulic clutch is operably asociated with the driven shaft and the output shaft, and means is provided for selectively clutching and declutching the output shaft from the driven shaft. An oil pump is mounted at the end of the hollow driven shaft opposite the clutch and has an oil pump drive shaft concentric with and keyed to the outer end of the power takeoff driven shaft. This pump provides a supply of hydraulic fluid under high pressure for controlling the clutch and a braking apparatus situated in surrounding relation to the power takeoff output shaft and also providing, through a pressure regulator, low pressure hydraulic fluid for lubricating the moving parts inside of the power takeoff housing.
