A sanitary absorbent article having flaps which diverge from their proximal side over a large portion of their length, preferably until their distal side. The transverse sides of the flaps are configured such as to reduce the shear stress at the areas where the flaps join with the main body, to prevent the flaps from tearing away when the sanitary absorbent article is removed from the underwear with the flaps still attached to the underwear.
