The present invention is directed to a novel sanitary napkin having an elongate central absorbent element with opposite longitudinal side edges and opposite transverse ends and a pair of laterally extending side flaps affixed to the longitudinal side edges of the central absorbent element along a line of juncture; each flap having a flexible portion 11 adjacent the line of juncture and a stiffened portion 12 continuous with and laterally outward from the flexible portion 11, the stiffened portion 12 having a resistance to lateral compressive forces and resistance to longitudinal compressive forces, wherein the resistance to lateral compressive forces is greater than its resistance to longitudinal compressive forces.
