A satellite paging system for transmitting paging information via a satellite to a plurality of pager receiver units. The system includes a mobile satellite receiver unit associated with each pager receiver unit. The mobile satellite receiver unit is adapted to receive the satellite downlink signal, frequency convert and rebroadcast the paging information at low power in a limited local area in which the pager receiving unit is located. The mobile satellite receiver unit can be vehicle based having a roof mounted antenna.
