ABSTRACT A saw chain cutter link with a raker having a cutting edge across the link and a gullet of special configuration that receives the chips. The gullet is positioned and shaped so that chips striking a surface thereof causes a couple force on the link that counteracts a couple force resulting from cutting such that the conventional upstanding lug depth gauge is eliminated. The gullet is generally "L" shaped having a first surface commencing adjacent the cutting edge of a raker and at a selected distance therefrom merges by an abrupt change in direction into a second planar surface disposed at an acute angle to the plane of cut. The second surface extends both upstream and downstream from the cutting edge of the raker with reference to the direction of travel of the chain during cutting and is located a selected distance downwardly from the plane of cut.
