SCANNER POSITIONING MECHANISM ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A scanner system for use with a nuclear reactor incorporates a plurality of permanent guide tubes secured adjacent respective banks of feeder pipes that conduct liquid coolant from the coolant headers. A radiation detector assembly includes a scanner carriage tethered by means of a reinforced signal transfer cable to a retraction reel, the carriage being displaceable along a selected scanner tube by compressed air, as the cable is paid-out, leakage of the air past the carriage serving to cool the tube, the carriage and its radiation detector. Retraction of the cable permits positioning of the carriage and radiation detector in predetermined relation relative to a selected one of the feeder pipes, whereby the scanner may be used to obtain a reading of any electromagnetic radiation such as neutron or other radiation from that feeder pipe. The signal output from the scanner is transferred by way of the retraction cable to a remotely located recording apparatus. Transfer carriage means located on a track positioned transversely of a plurality of feeder banks permits conveyance of the carriage, its associated detector cable and reel, and the air supply means to a selected guide tube for coupling of the carriage and its associated radiation detection elements thereto. The system permits ready monitoring of the feeder pipes on an individual basis for radioactive emission detection to indicate the possible presence of defected fuel within the individual fuel channels to which the feeder pipes are connected.
