D-21,382 SCRAMBLER FOR SUBSCRIPTION TELEVISION SYSTEM by Robert A. Sherwood and John C. Polonchak Abstract of Disclosure The delay introduced in a composite video signal by an RF carrier modulator is compensated for in a scrambler including an oscillator producing clock pulses having a frequency that is much greater than the repetition rate of synchronization pulses extracted from the composite video signal. A first digital counting circuit is responsive to initiation of a sync pulse for counting a first prescribed number of clock pulses prior to producing a pulse transition a short time prior to the start of a delayed horizontal blanking pulse carrying an associated sync pulse. A second digital counting circuit is responsive to this pulse transition for counting a second prescribed number of clock pulses for establishing a control pulse having a width that is greater than that of the delayed horizontal blanking pulse. The control pulse causes a step change in the signal level from an output circuit for suppressing the delayed blanking pulse and associated sync pulse in the RF television picture signal from the modulator, so as to produce a suppressed sync scrambled television signal.
