Abstract It is known to preheat scrap metal prior to melting. To improve the efficiency of use of scrap metal it is desirable to preheat the scrap to as high a temperature as possible with the least amount of waste heat. The present invention seeks to provide a more efficient system for preheatment of scrap by providing a scrap metal preheating system comprising: an elongate conveyor upon which the scrap to be preheated is deposited in an even bed; an elongate burner hood positioned along and above the conveyor and including a charging and discharging end thereof; a plurality of burners spaced one from another along the longitudinal axis of the burner hood; means for loading the scrap onto the conveyor in an even bed of length less than the length of the burner hood; conveyor control means for periodically advancing the bed of scrap through the burner hood : in a direction from the charging end thereof to the discharging end thereof; and burner control means for progressively operating only those burners positioned above the bed of scrap as the scrap is progressively shifted to- ward the discharge end to assure complete exposure of all scrap to direct burner flame.
