An apparatus for filtering a foreground image to minimize visible noise in the backing area and to preserve fine detail information of the foreground objects comprising a means (1) for generating a control signal having a level proportional to the brightness and visibility of the colored backing; a means (3) for adjusting the level of the control signal; a means (4) for subtracting the level matched control signal from the foreground video color signals; means (5, 6, 8, 9, 10) for processing foreground video color signals; a means (7, 11) for storing a video image defining boundary information determined by the processing means; a means (12) for storing the foreground color signals; a means (13) for applying a predetermined amount of filtering to the video signals stored in storing means (12); a means (14) for storing the video image after the predetermined amount of filtering has been applied for subsequent processing by the compositing video signals.
