A screen printing stencil is produced chemically by application of a chemical agent (4) to a carrier (2) having an image-receiving layer (1). The chemical agent (4) is applied dropwise using a computer-controlled ink-jet printer. The carrier is then brought into contact with a stencil-forming agent (6) on a screen printing mesh (5), whereby the chemical agent reacts with the stencil- forming agent to harden the stencil in areas which remain upon subsequent wash- out. The stencil so produced can be used for screen printing in the usual way. In a variant, the chemical agent reacts with the carrier and excess chemical agent remains to react with the stencil-forming agent. A part of the carrier is thereby incorporated into the stencil improving its profile. The method avoids the use of safe light and actinic radiation.

Un stencil sérigraphie est produit chimiquement par application d'un agent chimique (4) sur un support (2) comportant une couche (1) réceptrice d'image. L'agent chimique (4) est appliqué sous forme de gouttes à l'aide d'une imprimante à jet d'encre commandée par ordinateur. Le support est ensuite mis en contact avec un agent (6) formeur de stencil sur un réseau maillé (5) de sérigraphie, l'agent chimique réagissant avec l'agent formant le stencil pour durcir le stencil dans des zones qui restent après le lavage subséquent. Le stencil produit de cette manière peut être utilisé pour la sérigraphie de la même manière que les autres stencils. Dans une autre forme de réalisation, l'agent chimique réagit avec le support et l'agent chimique en excédent reste et réagit avec l'agent formant le stencil. Une partie du support est ainsi incorporé dans le stencil pour améliorer son profil. Ce procédé permet de ne pas utiliser de lampe inactinique et de radiation actinique.
