A screening means for a vessel for treating chips, having a screening body and a screw rotating therein. According to the invention the screening body has support rings (15) with radial recesses (16) to receive screening bars (8), the width of each recess being adjusted to the thickness of the screening bar (8) for play free assembly of the screening bar in the recess. The screening bars (8) are welded to the support rings (15). A method and device for manufacturing the screening body are characterized in that two assembly fixtures (20, 21) are used which are coupled together after assembling a first screening body section in the first assembly fixture (20) with the aid of support ring segments (27) which are fixed by spacers (26). The assembly and coupling together are repeated until the second assembly fixture (21), which is in the form of a drum (40), is entirely surrounded by screening bar sections. Before welding the drum (40) and the screening bars (8) retained by the drum (40) are surrounded by clamping rings (70) so that the support ring segments (27) of one and the same ring (15) are drawn together around the drum (40) which is entirely circular round.
