An improved screw fastener is disclosed having a chipping or routering feature partially projecting into the space between threads. It is preferred to have this chipping feature associated with notches provided at the periphery of the thread. The screw fastener has excellent low torque driveability characteristics and is particularly advantageous for high density materials, such as hardwoods used in the manufacture of furniture. A particular method of making the fastener is also disclosed.
