ABSTRACT. In tools for opening screw-top jars that cannot easily be opened by hand, it is known to have tools fox increasing the torsional forces that can be applied to the lids. This invention relates specifically to sealed rigid jars of the type that have multiple threads on their outside surfaces which engage with multiple threads on the inside edges of matching flexible lids and have resilient, compliant seals between the lids and the top edges of the jars. In this invention, the lids are prized away from the jars in such a way that air is allowed to enter into the jars and equalize the pressures inside the jars with atmospheric pressure. The prizing action may also deform one or more of the threads, and or the material surrounding the threads, on the inside edges of the lids. Either or both of these changes reduce the compression of the seals between the lids and the tops of the jars thereby reducing the torsional forces required to turn the lids and enabling the lids to be easily removed by hand. In prizing the lids away from the jars, the amount by which the prizing action can distort the lids is limited so that the lids are not permanently deformed to such an extent that they cannot be put back onto the jars and be used to manually close and seal the jars.
