Method and apparatus for indicating to a user of a data processing system having a display a location or locations of information within a presentation space. A first step provides on the display a view window for providing a view into a first region of a larger presentation space. A second step displays on the display at least one scrollbar having a moveable indicator for indicating a position of the view window within the presentation space. A third step displays within the scrollbar at least one indicia for indicating a relative location of a feature of interest within the presentation space. The indicia may take the form of alphanumeric characters, symbols, colors, graphical images, audio information and combinations thereof. In response to a user positioning the moveable indicator to a position associated with the at least one indicia a fourth step re-positions the view window to provide a view of a second region of the presentation space, the second region including the feature of interest.
L'invention est constituée par une méthode et un appareil servant à indiquer à l'utilisateur d'un système de traitement de données doté d'un afficheur l'emplacement ou les emplacements d'informations dans un espace de présentation. En une première opération sur l'écran, une fenêtre est présentée pour visualiser une première région faisant partie de cet espace de présentation. Dans une seconde opération, au moins une barre de défilement à indicateur mobile est affichée pour indiquer un emplacement de cette fenêtre de visualisation dans l'espace de présentation. Dans une troisième opération, au moins une étiquette est affichée dans la barre de défilement pour indiquer l'emplacement relatif d'une fonction désirée dans l'espace de présentation. Ces étiquettes peuvent prendre la forme de caractères alphanumériques, de symboles, de couleurs, d'images graphiques, d'informations audio et de combinaisons de ces formes. Dans une quatrième opération, en réponse à un positionnement par l'utilisateur de l'indicateur mobile à une position associée à l'une des étiquettes, la fenêtre de visualisation est repositionnée de façon à visualiser une seconde région de l'espace de présentation, cette seconde région contenant la fonction désirée.
