A self-adherent, shock absorbing sealant strip for use between the facing mounting surfaces of two spaced elements includes an elongated body made of a resilient material. A first sealing surface is located on a first side of the body and a second sealing surface is located on a second side of the body. Differential adhesion occurs between the first and second sealing surfaces so that the first sealing surface adheres more strongly to an associated first element than does the second sealing surface to an associated second element. The first and second associated elements are preferably a workpiece and a carrier body, respectively. Because the sealant adheres more strongly to the workpiece than to the carrier body, when the workpiece is removed from the carrier body, the sealant stays with the workpiece.
