Description

A sealed bearing assembly used in earth drilling is described having a first tubular member and a second tubular member telescopically received in the first tubular member. The second fluids member has an interior passage through which drilling fluids pass under pressure from surface pumps. A clearance space is provided between the first tubular member and the second tubular member defining a lubricant filled sealed chamber. The sealed chamber has a bit end sealed by bit end seal which faces a drill bit and a pump end sealed by pump end seal which faces surface pumps. A fixed mechanical seal is disposed in the sealed chamber intermediate the pump end seal and the drill bit end seal. The mechanical seal divides the sealed chamber into a pump end portion and a drill bit end portion. The pump end seal is responsive to pressure exerted by drilling fluids pumped along the interior passage by surface pumps. The drill bit end seal is responsive to pressure exerted by drilling fluids flowing externally to the first tubular member and the second tubular member.The mechanical seal seals a pressure differential between the pump end portion and the drill bit end portion of the sealed chamber.

Cette invention concerne un palier étanche pour appareil de forage, constitué par un premier élément tubulaire et un deuxième élément tubulaire s'emboîtant dans le premier. Le deuxième élément tubulaire comporte un passage dans lequel circulent les boues de forage sous pression refoulées par les pompes de surface. Un jeu est ménagé entre les deux éléments tubulaires, définissant une chambre étanche remplie de lubrifiant. L'étanchéité de cette chambre est assurée, à une extrémité, par une garniture d'étanchéité faisant face à l'outil de forage et, à l'autre extrémité, par une garniture d'étanchéité faisant face aux pompes de surface. Un joint mécanique fixe placé dans la chambre étanche divise celle-ci en deux parties. Côté pompes, la garniture d'étanchéité est soumise à l'action de la pression des boues de forage refoulées par les pompes dans le passage du deuxième élément tubulaire. Côté outil de forage, la garniture d'étanchéité réagit à la pression des boues de forage circulant à l'extérieur vers le premier élément tubulaire et le deuxième élément tubulaire. Le joint d'étanchéité mécanique maintient une différence de pression entre la partie de la chambre située côté pompe et la partie située côté outil de forage.
