A sealing element for a blowout preventer. The sealing element has a resilient hollow generally conical-shaped body having a first end, and a second end and an interior sidewall defining a central flow passage that extends from the first end to the second end. The second end is larger in diameter than the first end. The interior sidewall has annular projections defining a first annular seal and a second annular seal spaced from the first annular seal. The interior sidewall has a converging portion which converges from the first end to the first annular seal. The interior sidewall has a diverging portion which diverges from the first annular seal to the second annular seal for a width greater than the second annular seal terminating in a radiused transition portion. The converging portion of the interior sidewall is aligned with the radiused transition portion, such that fluids flowing along the interior sidewall of the converging portion that blow by the first annular seal strike the radiused transition portion and are directed back toward the first annular seal, thereby shielding the second annular seal from blow by.
