ABSTRACT A sealing means for insertion between the shaft and housing of a pump in which the seal is constituted by a soft packing enclosed in a flexible carrier which has on its outer surface a fluid dispersion arrangement, the soft packing being radially loaded by hydraulic fluid. The packing and carrier may be enclosed in a metal sleeve and holes may be provided through the packing and/or carrier wall.
