A graphite packing ring for use in a gland seal is formed by applying a layer of secondary material (30a, 30b) such as PTFE or PEEK having good friction reducing and/or sealing properties to a major surface (21) of a graphite tape prior to wrapping the tape around a former and compressing in a mould to form the packing ring of a desired configuration. Minimal quantities of secondary material (30a, 30b) are required but are exposed at the key areas on the surface of the packing ring, improving heat tolerance whilst reducing manufacturing costs.
Selon cette invention, un presse-joint en graphite utilisé dans une garniture d'étanchéité est formé par l'application d'une couche d'un matériau secondaire (30a, 30b), du type PTFE ou PEEK, qui possède de bonnes propriétés de frottement et/ou de scellement contre une surface majeure (21) d'une bande en graphite, suivie d'enroulement de la bande autour d'une forme et de compression dans un moule visant à former un presse-joint possédant la configuration désirée. L'invention permet d'utiliser des quantités minimales d'un matériau secondaire (30a, 30b) et de l'exposer cependant dans des zones clé à la surface du presse-joint, ce qui à pour effet d'augmenter la tolérance de la chaleur et de réduire les coûts de fabrication.
