An apparatus and method are provided for improving database searching, the method comprising the steps of: receiving a search query comprising one or more search keywords from a user; accessing a user profile means arranged to provide data indicative of relatedness criteria between keywords from a set of documents, and identifying from said user profile means, for the or each search keyword, potentially-related keywords according to predetermined criteria; providing said potentially-related keywords to the user; receiving information from the user confirming that any potentially-related keywords are considered to be related keywords; in the event that any potentially-related keywords are confirmed by the user to be related keywords, incorporating such potentially-related keywords as keywords in an improved search query; and submitting the improved search query to a search engine. Also provided are an apparatus and method for creating and maintaining user profiles for use in the above searching apparatus and method.
L'invention concerne un appareil et un procédé permettant d'améliorer les recherches dans les bases de données. Ce procédé comprend les étapes consistant à recevoir une interrogation de recherche comprenant un ou plusieurs mots-clés de recherche de la part d'un utilisateur, à accéder à un système de profil utilisateur conçu pour fournir des données indiquant des critères d'association entre les mots-clés d'un ensemble de documents, et à identifier à partir dudit système de profil utilisateur, pour le mot-clé ou pour chacun des mots-clés de recherche, les mots-clés potentiellement associés selon des critères prédéterminés, à fournir lesdits mots-clés potentiellement associés à l'utilisateur, à recevoir une information de la part de l'utilisateur confirmant que certains mots-clés potentiellement associés sont considérés comme étant des mots clés associés, et dans le cas où l'utilisateur confirme que certains mots-clés potentiellement associés sont des mots clés associés, à incorporer ces mots-clés potentiellement associés en tant que mots clés dans une interrogation de recherche améliorée, et à soumettre cette interrogation de recherche améliorée à un moteur de recherche. L'invention concerne également un appareil et un procédé permettant de créer et de tenir à jour les profils utilisateur destinés à l'appareil et au procédé de recherche susmentionnés.
