ABSTRACT A seat belt retractor prevents undesirable sound due to metal-to-metal contact between two metallic components. The seat belt retractor comprises a frame (10), a take-up reel (20) extending between the side walls (12) and (14) to take up a seat belt (18), a first gripping member (120) adapted to grip the seat belt, a shaft (134) extending within the frame (10), a second gripping member (136) including a support hole (138) into which the shaft (134) is inserted to provide a pivotal connection between the frame (10) and the second gripping member (136), the second gripping member being rotated between a position in which the free end of the second gripping member is overlapped with the first gripping member (120) and a position in which the free end of the second gripping member is separated from the first gripping member (120), lock actuating means for moving the second gripping member (136) to overlap with the first gripping member (120) when a vehicle is in an emergency situation, and a sleeve (170) made of synthetic resin and disposed between the inner peripheral surface of the support hole (138) of the second gripping member (136) and the outer peripheral surface of the shaft (134). When the vehicle is in a nonemergency situation, the second gripping member (136) is supported by the shaft (134) only through the sleeve 1 9 (170). When the vehicle is in an emergency situation, the sleeve (170) is resiliently deformed to allow the inner peripheral surface of the support hole (138) to directly contact with the outer peripheral surface of the shaft (134). 2 0
