Abstract An annular seat ring in an engine has a metallic body located between the upper surface of a cylinder head retainer and the lower surface of the cylinder head flange to limit the wear thereof and seal between them. A first annular seal groove in the seat ring upper side is spaced radially inwardly from the outer side of the seat ring and radially outwardly from the inner side of the seat ring. A first elastomeric seal member disposed in the first seal groove has a volume less than the volume of the first seal groove. A second annular seal groove in the seat ring lower side is spaced radially inwardly from the outer side of the seat ring and radially outwardly from the inner side of the seat ring. A second elastomeric seal member disposed in the second seal groove has a volume less than the volume of the second seal groove. The seal members have projecting portions which block the flow of hot lubricating oil between the head retainer and the head flange. The seal members are mechanically interconnected by connectors, formed integrally with the seal members, which extend through openings in the metal annulus. A chemical bond, although optional, is not necessary. The mechanical bond is a positive bond and is not subject to the inherent difficulties of chemical bonding.
